MORE THAN 100 singers ranging from teenagers to octogenarians will descend on the Old Parish Church in Peebles next month.
The world-renowned Glasgow Phoenix Choir arrive on Saturday February 6 in an evening organised by Peebles Rotary Club.
The choir was founded in 1951 when members of the disbanded Glasgow Orpheus Choir, which began in 1901, decided to continue with a
newly formed group.
They continue to perform throughout the British Isles, Europe and North America. With a library of more than 1,000 titles and over 30 albums recorded, the choir's extensive and varied repertoire includes music from West End and Broadway shows and easy-listening numbers through to oratorio, opera, chamber music, and sacred music from all the major composers, plus Scottish songs.
The proceeds of the evening will be in aid of the Rotary International charity, which, jointly with the World Health Organisation, is working to eliminate polio throughout the world.
Many millions of people have already been immunised and polio has now been contained to only a few pockets worldwide. Polio eradication has been Rotary's top priority since 1985 with more than $1.2billion contributed to the effort.
Glasgow Phoenix Choir arrive on stage at 7.30pm and tickets, priced at £7.50, are on sale from David Spencer on 01721 722195, Tony Storey Opticians, High Street, or Graham McGrath, Eastgate, both in Peebles.
