"THE sound of Norma Winstone, the groove of Flora Purim, the swing of Annie Ross and a dash of Anita O'Day."
That was the glowing assessment by leading jazz singer Lee Gibson given to the Brigitte Beraha Trio, who perform at The Wynd in Melrose on Saturday, August 29.
The music, mainly written by Brigitte Beraha, but also by other band members Fulvio Sigurta (trumpet/flugelhorn) and John Turtville (piano), is very much influenced by Brigitte’s multi-lingual background and by the likes of John Surman, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler and Azymuth, Chick Corea, Milton Nascimento and Hermeto Pascoal.
Born in Milan and raised in Monaco by Turkish and British parents, Brigitte moved to London in 1996. She studied at Goldsmiths College – where she now leads vocal and jazz improvisation workshops – and completed the jazz postgraduate course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Brigitte then recorded her debut album, Prelude to A Kiss, with a first-class band, including Ingrid Laubrock on tenor sax, Barry Green on piano and guest vocalist Anita Wardell.
The album went on to receive rave reviews and extensive international and national radio play.
Since then Brigitte has remained active on the music scene, singing at festivals in and outside of the UK.
She is also a member of Pete Billington’s Nonentity and, on top of playing alongside established jazz musicians such as Pete King and Julian Siegel, she often guests with rising stars, including Ivo Neame and Dave Manington Quartet.
In 2007, Brigitte successfully toured the UK with her newly formed trio – Joe Auckland (trumpet/fluegelhorn) and Ivo Neame (piano). On the back of the tour a new album was recorded, entitled Flying Dreams.
The album of original material, and also featuring Phil Donkin and George Hart, bears the imprint of Brigitte’s diverse cultural and multi-lingual upbringing.
It has also been well received and has continued the growing reputation of Brigitte, who has a “tremendous future to explore” according to jazz singer Dame Cleo Laine and composer John Dankworth CBE.
The show starts at 8pm and tickets (£12, concession £10) are available from The Wynd box office on 01896 820028.
