A NEWLY-Formed Borders community theatre group hits the road this Saturday for a mini-tour of the region with their production, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
Odd Productions was been set up by Kath Mansfield, right, of Eddleston, aimed at amateur actors keen to take their plays to venues around the locality and willing to produce high quality productions.

Kath once again directs and plays the lead role – made famous by Maggie Smith, pictured top of page, in the 1969 movie – in the play, following a similar position in Odd Productions’ debut show Juno and the Paycock.

Adapted by Jay Presson Allen from the novel by Muriel Sparks, the play’s eponymous Miss Brodie is dangerous and frustrated in love.

Kath said: “The combination of strong egos and their various interactions makes this play fascinating. It is tightly-scripted and full of humour and pathos.”

An English teacher by profession, Kath formed her own company to produce Juno and the Paycock, a play she had wanted to do for many years.

When her older brother died suddenly at the age of 50, Kath decided there was no time to lose and used her past experience in public relations to become director, producer and marketing manager of her own product.

Juno and the Paycock went on to pack venues throughout Peeblesshire and also visited Edinburgh.

And Kath continues to enjoy her new role as head of her own theatre company.

She said: “There is nothing more fun than working as a team to create an exciting piece of storytelling – and you get dressed up too, which I love.

“Having been terrified when I started up Odd Productions, I would definitely recommend anyone who has a burning desire to follow their dream to get on and do so.

“I am happy to be actively involved in a creative process with a group of like-minded folk who are equally passionate about drama and who are a really lovely bunch of people to spend time with.”

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie visits Carlops Village Hall this Saturday (8pm, £7), travels to Peebles’ Eastgate Theatre on November 26 and 28 (7.30pm, £8) and The Wynd in Melrose on Friday, November 27 (7.30pm, £10).
