SCOTLAND'S favourite twins, unless you are a Hearts fan, return to the Borders this Sunday with a slightly different appearance.
Gone are the trademark glasses of Charlie Reid, although Craig Reid, the other half of The Proclaimers, remain in place.
But fans attending this weekend’s gig at Kelso’s Tait Hall are still guaranteed the same broad Scots brogue and mix of songs – humourous and angst-ridden in equal measure – that have made The Proclaimers one of country’s strongest exports.
The Kelso show coincides with the release of the brothers’ eighth studio album entitled Notes and Rhymes, and fans will be given the chance to hear new material as well as the older tunes that are now anthems.
‘As welcome as an old friend’ is how their latest album has been described, and it is hard to believe The Proclaimers have now been belting out songs for 22 years.
During that time, as well as enjoying a plethora of hits, the duo’s strong Scottish identity has meant they have been generally embraced around the world, including the United States.
Parodied by Wayne’s World duo Mike Myers and Dana Carvey on Saturday Night Live in 1992, their songs have gone on to feature in films such as Benny and Joon, Dumb and Dumber, Shrek, and most recently, Mama’s Boy.
But their return to the Borders is also welcome, having played in front of 3,000 spectators at the inaugural Big Day Out festival in Galashiels in 2005 and entertained Selkirk’s Victoria Halls two years ago.
Their Kelso date is the last of a mini tour of alternative venues around Scotland, which includes Portree tomorrow and Oban on Saturday.
