I have just been at the swimming pool in Galashiels where I was amazed to see yet another all-weather, sand-based, bristle surface has been put down on the site of the multi-courts, similar to Hawick and Earlston, with another, I am led to believe, due to be laid at Tweedbank.
These surfaces are fine for hockey, but totally unsuitable in the 21st century for rugby or football training.
I have seen some horrendous, festering wounds from falls on the surface and it is amazing, in this litigious society, that no-one has yet tried to sue Scottish Borders Council for injury. Many other authorities are now moving away from this obsolete technology for safety reasons and simply because much better surfaces are now available.
Can I suggest that the hockey players train at Galashiels, Hawick and Earlston, and play their matches on the full-size hockey pitch in Hawick.
Thus the rest of the Borders sporting community could get a surface suited to their needs at Tweedbank.
