As part of their course, a group of students from Borders College decided that they would like to plan and participate in an event that would raise funds for a local charity.
The students’ preferred beneficiary was Borders Asperger and Autism Group Support (BAAGS) which is based in Melrose and shares experiences and views with individuals and families who may support and care for children and adults who are affected by as
pergers/autism.

The students decided to do a sponsored walk to Melrose Abbey ice-cream shop and back to the new Borders College campus at Netherdale. They dressed up for the occasion – some as fairies, some as Goths and some came as themselves. Their lecturer, Bryan Gracie, shepherded them, cajoled them and bought them ice-cream.

Once completed a grand total of approximately £220 was raised. The students did themselves and the college proud.

The money they have raised will be used to meet the costs incurred in running the carer-van, ensuring that the cost to the families using it will be kept to an absolute minimum, allowing the people who need a break have somewhere that is convenient, affordable and suitable for all family members.

As always, we at BAAGS are indebted to the Borders people for their support and financial contributions – especially to the campus students who are not the highest earners among us. Thank you all for your support and the hard work involved in organising this event.
