It was with great interest and sadness that I read recently of the death of Staff Sergeant Jack Dempsey, formerly of Selkirk. I served in the 78th Field Regiment with Jack during the Second World War in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, up to the termination of hostilities at Lake Garda in May 1945.
I have attended the reunions of the 8th Army Veterans’ Association, hoping to meet gunners of the 310th Midlothian Battery of the 78th Field Regiment, but without success. I wonder if a contact with any surviving members of the battery could be established by email. I realise that because of age (I am 90) not many will be surviving, but still it may be worth a try.
