Ironing out criticisms about golf
Published Date:

Peter Clarke, in his column last week, is a brave man to disparage at one fell swoop both football and golf, the two sports most deeply engrained in a Scotsman's psyche.
I will leave the soccerphiles to speak for themselves, but must not allow his disgruntled attack on the Royal and Ancient game to go unanswered.
In denigrating this wonderful sport, does Mr Clarke really know what he's talking about?
Has he ever experienced the sheer animal joy of cracking a long drive straight down the fairway (with just a hint of a draw) into a clear blue sky? Has he felt the exhilaration of striking a five-iron out of the sweet spot and watching the ball soar and then nestle beside a distant flagstick? In short, has he ever lived?
These magical moments may be few and far between for most golfers, but, boy, are they worth waiting for!
Try it, Peter, you might just get the bug.
