I've just been back to Selkirk for the most glorious common riding in ages and was delighted to see the town looking much brighter and seemingly more prosperous than in recent times.
Maybe it was the great weather, but I felt that the town was greatly improved.

I came this year with a new device which enables me to make high-resolution panoramic photographs by taking hundreds of individual pictures and stitching them together.

Thanks to John Thompson and McKay and Partners, I was able to secure a great vantage point in the town square and took three of these panoramic sets during the Casting of the Colours.

I’d like to invite your readers to look at them on www.gigapan.org and then put Selkirk Common Riding in the search box. They can then explore the pictures to try to find themselves in the crowd.

This was experimental this year and, having a moving mass of people and a limited time, compromised the photos somewhat, but I’m sure that many Souters will enjoy searching through them.

While writing, I’d like to repeat my request to the Common Riding Trust to announce and introduce the individual standard bearers as they mount the stage. I’m putting a video of all the castings on YouTube during the next couple of weeks and will have sample announcements on it to encourage this small change.
