Berwick example bursts rail claim
Let me start by saying I am not opposed to railways, and would love to see one which would serve the Borders – a commuter train going round the Border towns and linking up at say Galashiels or Tweedbank.
Now let me ask this simple question: who will benefit from this so-called Borders railway that has been a huge source of photocall opportunities for a few of our councillors?
According to our trusty leaders, "all the Borders people", saying things like the railway has huge potential to grow the local economy etc. , etc.
Please tell me why Berwick is not the jewel in the crown, regarding a booming and vibrant economy, with full employment, etc?
Berwick has a railway station on one of the busiest lines in the country, it also has a port and harbour, and sits beside one of Scotland's busiest roads, the A1.
How can I be expected to believe that a single-line tramway, terminating at Tweedbank, will be the panacea for all our problems?
I will finish by saying we keep hearing of large numbers of tourists arriving by train – what, may I ask, are visitors going to do when they get to Tweedbank?
