Rural has something for everyone

DELEGATES from several Roxburghshire Rurals represented the federation at the 27th national conference, entitled Something for Everyone.

Anita Manning, well known as an expert on antiques through her television appearances, entertained with her lively description of how she came to be involved in antiques.

On a more serious note, the Reverend Dr Iain Macleod Greenshields told how he and his family adopted a Chinese orphan. They then went on to found the charity Hope4China which supports 400 girls in different capacities.

Nell Nelson amused her audience with a description of travelling from Hong Kong to Australia by bicycle, collecting recipes on her way.

The final talk was by Lt Col. Sir Malcolm Ross who, as a former member of the Royal Household, had some hilarious anecdotes to share.

A motion from Cockburnspath WRI deploring the practice of unsolicited goods being sent out by charities – e.g. raffle tickets – putting pressure on consumers was passed unanimously.

There was an exhibition of entries from rurals in Scotland. Joan Duncan (Makerstoun WRI) came third in the Playfair-Hannay competition for a sewn drawstring bag and second equal for a pair of child’s dungarees.
