New look Gala CC faces challenges

A NEW-LOOK Galashiels Community Council will play an important role in maintaining the town, says its departed chairman, writes Kenny Paterson.

Bill White stood down after his election as an independent Scottish Borders councillor last month.

In his place steps former planning spokesman Ian Purvis, with Judith Cleghorn taking over as treasurer from Andrew McQueen, and Tracey Alder remaining as secretary.

Ex-Gala RFC president Gordon Richardson has become vice-chairman, while former Olympic judo team manager Rick Kenney is among the eight new faces on a 14-strong community council.

Mr White said: “Hopefully the new community council will gel quickly. I am looking forward to working with them.

“We have some new blood on the community council so I hope that will make a difference.

“I think in the current climate, the community council will be more important than ever. With the budgets restrained, I expect more community involvement will be needed.

If you look at the work of the community group who worked on the flower beds at Old Gala House, it was fantastic and more of that will likely be needed.”

The remaining members of the new community council are Murray Dickson, Tony Brown, Nazera Rutherford, Mark Kettrick, William Brown, Alex Turnbull, Claire Howden and John McLaren.
