Same-sex marriage can be traced back to the Middle Ages

Mrs A. G. Allan wants to bring “some sanity” to the debate on same-sex marriage – unfortunately her letter (Southern, December 27) does not help.

Her claim that marriage has been defined since “the time of Abraham” is wrong. For example, the Vatican Roman Catholic Church married men in the Middle Ages, and my Oxford Dictionary (1964) does not specify the gender of persons joined in wedlock.

Some churches want to marry same-sex couples, including the Quakers and the Metropolitan Community Church.

Mrs Allan’s idea that loving couples should buy an old church, create a religion and marry themselves is ridiculous.

Her references to sodomy and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah are irrelevant. The adult heterosexual community commits around five times as much sodomy as that enjoyed by the relatively small gay male community. Lesbians couples cannot commit sodomy.

I fear Mrs Allan has allowed her prejudices to affect her “sanity”.
