‘Local’ doesn’t matter

At a recent Infinis exhibition of its proposed wind farm development at Cummings Hill, I queried the following statement in its promotional pamphlet:

“The site has many advantages ... with no international or national designations such as sites of special scientific interest, national scenic areas, special areas of conservation or special protection areas.”

I pointed out that Cummings Hill was within the new Teviot Valley Special Landscape Area, only to be told by the Infinis representative that this was just a “local” designation and had no weight in the hierarchy of national special sites.

Have we wasted our time in the Borders carrying out a long, detailed investigation and consultation exercise to produce these special landscape areas? Does the opinion of the Borders community have so little influence on the designation of wind farm development sites?
