Life and work of John Muir
Yosmite national park
BROADCASTER, folk singer and well-known walker Jimmie Macgregor, pictured above, will highlight the life and work of Dunbar-born naturalist John Muir at an illustrated talk in Yarrow Feus Hall on Saturday.
Jimmie has had a lifelong interest in wildlife, is a dedicated conservationist and periodically escaped from the studio to make radio and television programmes on long-distance walks in Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the Arctic. Most of these trips resulted in books which he presents as illustrated talks around the country.
Muir is most famous as the creator of the Yosemite national park on America’s west coast. As a long-time admirer, Jimmie leapt at the opportunity to visit San Francisco, the Napa Valley, Muir’s home at Martinez, Yosemite national park and the Sierra Nevada. Finally, he fulfilled a lifetime ambition to see for himself California’s giant Redwoods, among the biggest and oldest living things on the planet.
Jimmie is a fellow of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, a life member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the Friends of Loch Lomond and the John Muir Trust. He is also president of Rural Scotland and Friends of the River Kelvin.
Also on hand to provide a local aspect to the work of the John Muir Trust will be Sandy Maxwell, conservation manager, and Karen Purvis, assistant manager, who will explain the work of the trust at the newly-acquired Glenlude Estate.
