Downside of 2,200 rail job applications

Christine Grahame, MSP for Midlothian South, says it’s a good sign that 2,200 people applied for the 18 posts advertised by Scotrail (heSouthern (February 7).

Have you thought of this the other way as I have? This states for me the dire unemployment status in the Borders area.

She also says it would be great to be able to say “I drive a train for a living.” I think the majority of the 2,200 applicants would be happy to say “I have a job”.

It will be very interesting to see how many local people will be successful in applying for the positions.

Another point Ms Grahame makes is that the successful applicants from outside the area will come to the Borders to live. Will they? They may decide to live in Edinburgh, the city end of the line.

If they come to stay in the Borders, I am sure it won’t take them long to find out how difficult it is to gain employment in the Borders region.
