Just Great, Borderers

THE Great Yorkshire Show may have been cut short by wet weather – but not before Borders farmers scooped accolades.

Regularly among the rosettes, Jim and Willie Thomson, of Hownam Grange, Morebattle, topped the North Country Cheviots with a gimmer which went on to finish reserve overall in the sheep section. Reserve champion in the breed was Roderick Runicman, Allanshaws, Galashiels, with a one-crop ewe, the reserve female to the Thomsons’ gimmer, and he also took the male championship with a four-shear tup (and the Thomsons were reserve).

Along at the Zwartbles, Charles Scott, East Middle, Hawick, won the breed’s reserve champion rosette with a homebred shearling

Hereford breeders Ron and Robert Wilson, Cowbog, Morebattle, lifted the Hereford junior championship and reserve breed ticket with their young homebred bull Romany 1 Heavy Duty.

And Whittaker & Co, Stickle Heaton Farm, Cornhill-on-Tweed won the Aberdeen Angus championship with their heifer Haughton Laura which scooped also the junior champion and female champion rosettes.
