Barmy cash for cancer charity
MADCAP fundraisers the Borders Barmy Army (BBA) handed over £5,500 to Macmillan Cancer Care at Borders General Hospital (BGH) last Friday, pictured right.
The BBA gathered the money from their Three Peaks Challenge in August, when they climbed the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales.
BBA secretary Lee Myers said: “We are delighted to confirm that every penny has gone to the local Macmillan and will help local people. We would like to say a huge thank you to all 20 of our participants for taking part and for doing such a fantastic job with their sponsorship.”
He also thanked Borders businesses who supported the challenge and the BBA generally, adding: “2012 has been a year we will never forget! We have supported no less than six charities: we took part in the Star Walk for the Rowan Boland Trust, we abseiled off the BGH for The Friends Of the BGH Charity, we swam a mile in our kilts for Sports Relief, and Steve (Mellor, BBA chairman) and I completed Movember for the third year in a row.”
The group also ran for a day on a treadmill for the Fire Fighters Charity, undertook the Fire Fighter for a Day Challenge with Lothian and Border Fire and Rescue and won The Tough Enough Challenge with Lancashire Fire & Rescue service.
Next year the fundraisers plan climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, running the Edinburgh marathon and the Great North Run as well as taking part in the pantomine horse race at Kelso races for the fourth year to raise cash.
