Councillors on the road for first time in eight years

COUNCILLORS will today (Thursday) hold their meeting outside Newtown St Boswells for the first time in eight years.

The talks at Peebles High School are due to discuss health and care, flood protection, the Borders Railway, and plans regarding the police, fire and rescue and community safety.

Scottish Borders Council leader David Parker announced last month that the new administration would meet twice a year outside the local authority headquarters.

The last time councillors went on the road was in 2004 to the Tait Hall in Kelso.

Convenor of SBC, Tweeddale councillor Graham Garvie, said: “I am pleased that the first meeting of the new council away from headquarters is being held in Peebles.

“This is a very good opportunity for people to attend the meeting and see how it operates at close hand.”

The meeting begins at 10am in the assembly hall and is open to the public.

Meanwhile, SBC has announced that advanced works on Peebles High’s new £4million sport facilities will begin at the start of the summer holidays.

The design team is currently preparing detailed drawings in preparation for construction tenders being invited towards the end of this year.

The main building works are expected to get underway in 12 months and be completed before Easter 2014.

This summer’s work includes removing underground power cables and diverting a water main, both situated under the school playing fields.

Information about the summer works is being sent to parents and SBC is asking nearby residents to keep away from the playing fields while they are ongoing, for their own safety.

Councillor Sandy Aitchison, executive member for education, said: “I am delighted this long-awaited project is underway and I look forward to seeing this much-needed facility becoming a reality.”
