Chinese takeaway approved

A FORMER Hawick pub is to be turned into a Chinese takeaway, despite local concerns over parking, writes Kenny Paterson.

Members of Scottish Borders Council’s planning committee approved the bid submitted by Yannan Fei at the former Balmoral Bar on Langlands Road. The application includes turning the first floor of the building into staff accommodation.

But Hawick Community Council, as well as members of the public, had reservations that there was no on-site parking, with 100 car movements estimated per day. They also claimed there were already problems with vehicles parking at the foot of nearby Rosalee Brae.

But Derek Inglis, SBC’s principal roads planning officer, said: “There is a lay-by nearby which can take a couple of cars comfortably and there is quite a lot of parking within a short walking distance of the premises.”

Mr Inglis did add that his department would monitor the parking issue.

Fears were also expressed regarding noise, litter and smell from the new food outlet, which will employ three people.

But planners took into account that the building was previously a pub and restaurant, which generated late night noise and cooking smells.

Hawick councillor Ron Smith added: “It had an existing use as a pub and if there is a concern with parking, officers have promised to keep a watching brief on the situation.”
