Borderers welcome eight Chernobyl girls

EIGHT girls who live in the area contaminated by the Chernobyl nuclear power station explosion in 1986 have arrived in the Borders for a month-long healthy holiday.

The group of 11-year-olds from the Brest region of Belarus flew into Edinburgh Airport on Sunday and will be staying with local families during their visit.

The Chernobyl Children’s Life Line Scottish Borders Link has arranged a number of activities for the youngsters to enjoy and local businesses have rallied to provide financial support.

The charity is running a clothing exchange shop in Jedburgh where the Belarus girls will be given a suitcase full of clothes.

The Borders link was set up in 2001 and for the past 11 years has raised £35,000 to bring 90 Belarus youngsters over to this region for an important health break to help them cope with the contamination in their homeland.

Further details about the visit and how to host youngsters from the affected Chernobyl area are available from Fraser Simm on 01578 730543 or Sarab Barton on 01835 840333.
