Border Reiver painting rides to help of town band

Rob Black's painting of the Border Reiver is available to buy in aid of the Galashiels Town band

THE iconic Border Reiver figure in front of Galashiels town clock and war memorial plays a central role in the Braw Lads’ Day activities, writes Kenny Paterson.

And two prints of the statue created by Thomas Clapperton are to be gifted to Braw Lad Ryan Mania and Braw Lass Nicola Mackay.

The piece is the work of local artist Rob Black, who initially painted it to mark the opening of funeral directors A. & A. Doyle.

Now the firm has produced 400 prints which are to be sold to support Galashiels Town Band.

Iain Wilson, treasurer of the town band, said: “We are investing large amounts of time and money in developing a new generation of young players.

“Over 40 children now learn to play brass and percussion instruments each week under the baton of musical director Stuart Black.

“The funds generated by the sale of these prints will greatly assist the band in supporting this work.”

Allan Doyle added: “I have been involved with Galashiels Town Band for most of my life and Rob has been an active supporter of the band for many years.

“It seems only right that such a good painting of an iconic Gala landmark should be used to help one of the town’s oldest institutions.”

The prints, which are mounted and ready to frame, are on sale to the public from A & A Doyle in Bank Street.
