Asda offers free meeting room
A GALASHIELS store is opening its doors to provide a community centre for not-for-profit groups.
Asda is providing the space at its Currie Road premises, saying the centre will not cost local groups a penny.
The facility is for organisations who look to improve the quality of people’s lives locally and the supermarket giant is calling on groups to sign up.
It is part of the store’s Community Life scheme, launched at the end of March.
Those eligible include schools, skills trainers, homework clubs, health clubs, neighbourhood watch, teaching courses, community police events, and groups holding meetings.
Asda’s Galashiels store manager, Lynne Taylor, said: “We are opening up our training room and customer café at no cost because we realise that finding a space to sit down and meet is becoming increasingly hard for not-for-profit organisations.
“We’ll be keeping an events calendar on our community life noticeboard so people are aware of the bigger events and those that are open to all.”
Use of the space is free and there is no need for anyone using the space to shop at the store, says Asda.
The store’s community life champion for Galashiels, Amy Bryson, added: “We require eight weeks’ notice of a booking and evidence of public liability insurance, which most groups should have.
“I will act as host for the group but other than that we will simply be there if they need us – it really is their space.”
